Each format with its shape and the size to export. Width 1080 is what Instagram shows on a phone, so a wider picture is scaled down and a narrower one loses detail.

Six habits for sizing posts. They are general guidance, and how your posts look on your own grid is the test.
Shoot with room to spare
Leave space around the subject so you can crop to 4:5, 3:4 or 9:16 later.
Check the grid crop
A 4:5 post shows as 3:4 on the grid. Keep faces and text away from the left and right edges.
Keep Story text in the middle
The top and bottom of a Story sit under the name and the reply bar.
Export at 1080 wide
Instagram scales pictures to 1080 pixels wide. Bigger files do not look sharper.
Use one shape for a carousel
All slides take the shape of the first one, so plan them in the same size.
Pick a Reel cover that fits 3:4
The grid cuts the cover to its middle 3:4, so place the title there.
