    Empty lines need something in them.
    
        
    A line with nothing on it can close up when a caption is posted or edited, and spaces at the end of a line are dropped. A blank character on each empty line keeps the gap you wrote.

    How do I add line breaks to an Instagram caption?

    What is the blank character?
    The Braille pattern blank, U+2800. It shows as empty space but counts as a character, so Instagram keeps the line.
    How long can an Instagram caption be?
    2,200 characters. About 125 show in the feed before "more", so the first line matters most.
    How many hashtags can a caption have?
    Five on a post or Reel, the limit Instagram announced in December 2025. The page warns you if there are more.
