How it works

A username in three steps.

Every suggestion is checked against Instagram's rules before you see it.

1

Type your name

Your name or your brand. Add what you do and a few keywords if you like.

2

Pick a style

Simple, Professional, Creative or Playful.

3

Check it in Instagram

Copy a name and type it into Instagram to see if it is free.

Instagram's username rules

Short, plain, yours.

Every suggestion passes Instagram's rules before it reaches you. Whether a name is still free is something only Instagram can tell you, so the page never guesses.

Length30 characters at most. Shorter names are easier to say, type and remember.
CharactersLetters a to z, numbers, periods and underscores. No spaces, no accents, no other symbols.
PeriodsNot at the start or the end, and never two in a row.
Taken namesEach username belongs to one account. Instagram tells you when the one you type is taken.
Changing itYou can change your username in Edit profile. Your old one may be taken by someone else after you change.
General guidance

Names people remember.

Six habits for picking a username. They are general guidance, and how often people find you is the test.

01

Say it out loud

If you have to spell it twice on the phone, pick a simpler one.

Bakery@emma.bakes reads the way it sounds
02

Match your other accounts

The same name on Instagram, your website and other apps helps people find the right account.

Studio@studionoe everywhere
03

Add what you do

A word for your trade tells strangers what the account is before they open it.

Trainer@daniel.trains
04

Use one period, not five

A period or underscore can split words. Several in a row look like a typo.

Clinic@harbour.dental, not @harbour..dental
05

Leave numbers out

Numbers look like a name was taken. Add one only if it means something to you.

Café@daniels.cafe rather than @danielscafe2
06

Check before you print

Make sure the name is yours on Instagram before it goes on signs, cards or a shop window.

Questions

Questions about Instagram usernames.

The rules, availability and the styles.

Does the generator check if a username is available?
No. Only Instagram knows which names are taken, and this page does not ask it. Type the name into Instagram under Edit profile, Username, and it tells you at once.
What characters can an Instagram username have?
Letters, numbers, periods and underscores, up to 30 characters. Usernames cannot have spaces or accents, and a period cannot start or end one or come twice in a row.
Why are all the names in lower case?
Instagram shows usernames in lower case, so the suggestions match what people will see and type.
Can I use my business name if someone has it?
Not the same one. Try a version with what you do or where you are, such as a period and your trade.
What do the styles change?
Simple stays close to your name, Professional adds what you do or your place, Creative and Playful play with the words.
Is my name stored?
No log keeps it. The same request within 7 days is answered from a store under a code made from it, not under your name.
