Five tags, five jobs.
Instagram allows at most five hashtags on a post or Reel. The generator gives each of the five a job, so together they describe the post from wide to local.
The limit of five was announced by Instagram in December 2025, checked 6 October 2026.
Hashtags that describe the post.
Six habits for choosing tags under the five-tag limit. They are general guidance, and your own reach is the test.
Describe the post, not the account
Tags work best when they match what this one post shows. A cake post gets cake tags.
Pick the tag people search for
Niche tags are the words a person types when they want this exact thing.
Add the place when it matters
Local tags help people nearby. Leave them out when the post is not about a place.
Keep one brand tag
A tag with your name gathers your posts in one place for people who already know you.
Skip generic tags
Tags such as #instagood describe nothing about the post. Use the space for a niche tag.
Put them at the end
Hashtags at the end of a caption keep the first lines readable before "more".
