The numbers that matter

Four limits worth knowing by heart.

Checked against current platform guidance, 30 September 2026.

Instagram hashtags5per post and per Reel since December 2025. The rest are ignored.
Instagram caption2,200characters, of which about 125 show before "more".
TikTok caption4,000characters, raised from 2,200.
LinkedIn post3,000characters, about 210 visible on a computer.
Every platform

Character limits, side by side.

The limit stops a post from publishing. The cut decides whether anyone reads past your first line. The checker shows both for your caption.

The first line

Write for the cut, not the limit.

Most people decide from the part they see before "more". Put the reason to keep reading there, and leave greetings, emoji rows and hashtags for later.

  • A promise: "Three signs you grind your teeth at night."
  • A question the reader has: "Is whitening safe for sensitive teeth?"
  • A number: "What a first visit costs, and what it includes."

Instagram's 5-hashtag rule

Five tags. Choose them like topics.

Hashtags now tell Instagram what a post is about. They are not a way to reach extra people on their own.

Describe the post

The service, the problem, the place. Five that say what the post is about.

#nightguard #teethgrinding #leedsdentist

Most specific first

A narrow tag says more than a broad one, so it goes first.

#nightguard before #smile

Caption or first comment

A hashtag in the first comment counts the same as one in the caption. Pick whichever keeps the caption cleaner.

LinksLinks in Instagram captions are not clickable, so point to the link in your bio. On LinkedIn and Facebook, a link in the first comment keeps the post itself clean.
MentionsAn @mention notifies the account you tag. Tag people and businesses that took part in the post.
Questions

Before you use it.

How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?

Five per post and per Reel. Instagram lowered the limit from 30 to 5 in December 2025, and any extra hashtags are ignored. Hashtags in the first comment count the same way as hashtags in the caption.

How long can a caption be?

Instagram 2,200 characters, TikTok 4,000, LinkedIn 3,000, a YouTube description 5,000, Threads 500, X 280 for standard accounts, a Google Business Profile post 1,500 and a Pinterest description 500. Facebook allows much longer posts.

What is the part before "more"?

Feeds show only the start of a caption until someone taps to open it: roughly the first 125 characters on Instagram, about 210 on LinkedIn on a computer and about 150 in a YouTube description. That first line decides whether anyone reads the rest.

Do you keep my caption?

No. The checker runs in your browser and nothing is sent to us.
